The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has alleged that the Kogi State Government was behind the attack on their campaign office in Lokoja, which resulted in the destruction of billboards and property.
Dr. Arome Okeme, the SDP’s state secretary, made the accusation in a press release, claiming that hoodlums and thugs affiliated with the state government carried out the assault.
Dr. Okeme highlighted past incidents where supporters of the SDP were subjected to violence and intimidation during elections.
These incidents included physical assaults on the party’s candidate for the Kogi central senatorial elections, Barr. Natasha Akpoti, as well as the burning of the party’s secretariat in 2019.
The SDP Secretary called on the Inspector-General of Police to take action and apprehend the perpetrators, warning that failure to do so could lead to further unrest.
In response, the Kogi State Government, through the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, distanced itself from the attack.
The government emphasized its commitment to upholding the democratic process and warned criminals and hoodlums to stay away from the upcoming governorship poll.
Fanwo also urged political parties to avoid making inflammatory statements that could disrupt the peace in the state.
The SDP remains determined to continue its campaign efforts, vowing not to be intimidated by the incident and expressing confidence in the support of the people of Kogi state.
