  1. 1 medium-sized catfish
  2. 2 scotch bonnet peppers
  3. 1 onion
  4. 2 garlic cloves
  5. 1 tablespoon of ground crayfish
  6. 1 tablespoon of ground uziza seeds
  7. 1 tablespoon of ground utazi leaves
  8. 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  9. 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper
  10. 1 teaspoon of salt
  11. 2 cubes of Maggi (or other seasoning cubes)
  12. 1 liter of water
  13. 1 handful of fresh scent leaves

  1. Clean and gut the catfish. Cut it into 4-5 pieces and set aside.
  2. Peel and chop the onion and garlic.
  3. Wash the scotch bonnet peppers and remove the seeds. Chop the peppers into small pieces.
  4. In a large pot, add the water, chopped onions, garlic, scotch bonnet peppers, ground crayfish, ground uziza seeds, ground utazi leaves, ginger, black pepper, salt, and seasoning cubes. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Once the mixture is boiling, add the catfish pieces to the pot. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the catfish is fully cooked.
  6. Turn off the heat and add the handful of fresh scent leaves to the pot. Stir the soup gently to combine the ingredients.
  7. Serve hot with some fufu, eba, or any other swallow of your choice.


  1. You can use any type of catfish you prefer, but some people believe that the African catfish (also known as “clarias gariepinus”) is the best for pepper soup.
  2. If you can’t find fresh scent leaves, you can use dried or frozen ones instead.
  3. Adjust the amount of scotch bonnet peppers you use according to your taste preference. If you prefer a milder soup, use only one pepper instead of two.
