ISWAP Fighters Launch Deadly Attack on Borno Police Station, Killing Four Officers and Seizing Ammunition

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) carried out a brazen attack on a police station in Gajiram town, Nganzai Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, resulting in the tragic death of at least four policemen. The assailants, armed and outnumbering the officers on duty, raided the police station late on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and making off with a cache of ammunition.

Security sources revealed that the ISWAP fighters opened fire on the policemen, overpowering them during the attack. The invaders reportedly partially torched the police station, creating chaos in the town. In the aftermath, four police officers were confirmed dead, with some personnel yet to return as of the latest reports.

A vigilante source on the ground recounted the harrowing incident, stating, “There was confusion in our town last night. The ISWAP fighters attacked the police station in Gajiram. They outnumbered and overpowered the policemen on duty. We found four dead bodies of the police who lost their lives early this morning, and some policemen are yet to return as we speak.”

The security forces swiftly mobilized in response to the attack, but the ISWAP fighters had already fled the scene by the time reinforcements arrived. The assailants’ ability to escape before military intervention highlights the challenges faced in combating insurgency in the region.

As of the time of this report, the police are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Borno State has been a recurrent target for insurgent attacks, underscoring the persistent security threats faced by the region.
