FRSC Orders Investigation Following Fatal Crash in Kogi That Leads to 13 Lives Lost

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has initiated a thorough investigation into a tragic multiple road traffic crash that occurred near Obajana market in Kogi State, resulting in the loss of 13 lives. Corps Marshal Dauda Ali Biu has directed the Kogi State sector commander to conduct a comprehensive probe to ascertain the causes of the accident and ensure the swift prosecution of all responsible drivers.

Biu emphasized that collaboration with the Nigeria Bar Association and state judiciaries will ensure that those accountable for the incident face appropriate legal action under the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012. He emphasized that the FRSC is committed to holding individuals accountable for their actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

According to FRSC spokesperson Jonas Agwu, preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved four vehicles, including two Dangote Trucks, one Sharon bus, and a motorbike. The accident was triggered when one of the Dangote trucks experienced brake failure at excessive speed, colliding with three stationary vehicles, including the bus carrying 12 passengers.

Tragically, the impact of the collision led to a fire outbreak, claiming the lives of 13 individuals, including the bus passengers and the motorbike rider. While two individuals were rescued without injuries, the remaining victims were burnt beyond recognition, and their bodies were deposited at the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.

Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the Kogi sector commander, disclosed that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, involving a commercial Sharon Spacewagon and an articulated cement truck near Obajana Market along the Obajana-Lokoja Road. Oyedeji cautioned motorists against speeding and urged for better vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The FRSC and relevant authorities are working diligently to address the underlying challenges contributing to road accidents, aiming to ensure the safety of all road users and prevent such devastating incidents from occurring again.
