Nigerian Doctor Makes History as First Black Woman to Open Sleep Clinic in the US

Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown, a Nigerian specialist in pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine, has made history by becoming the first Black woman to own a sleep clinic in the United States. Her clinic, Restful Sleep MD, focuses on improving sleep health for children and adults, particularly busy professional women and their children.

Dr. Afolabi-Brown, who trained at the University of Pennsylvania, brings over a decade of clinical experience to her practice. Restful Sleep MD offers comprehensive sleep care and coaching, addressing medical, psychosocial, and behavioral factors to create customized sleep treatments that respect family values.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Afolabi-Brown is an active public speaker and educator, raising awareness about the critical importance of sleep. She has been featured on prominent platforms such as ABC and BabyCenter and serves on various advisory boards and professional committees in the field of sleep medicine.

“Sleep deprivation doesn’t just affect the individual; it impacts the entire family unit,” Dr. Afolabi-Brown explained. “When a child is sleep-deprived, their physical, mental, and emotional health suffers. Parents are often physically and mentally exhausted themselves. That is why our approach is family-centered.”

Through her work at Restful Sleep MD, Dr. Afolabi-Brown is dedicated to helping families achieve better sleep for improved overall health and well-being.
