Gunmen Kill Kwara Monarch, Oba Segun Aremu-Cole, Abduct Wife, Two Others

In a daring evening assault on Thursday, unidentified gunmen attacked Koro town in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, claiming the life of the traditional ruler, Oba Segun Aremu-Cole. The assailants reportedly stormed the monarch’s palace around 7 pm, firing gunshots that fatally struck the traditional ruler. Adding to the tragedy, the monarch’s wife was abducted during the attack.

Koro Ekiti shares its boundary with Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State. This incident follows closely on the heels of the recent killings of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who confirmed the attack in a late-night statement, strongly condemned the assassination of the monarch. The governor expressed shock and abhorrence at the incident, instructing security agencies to deploy all available resources to track down the perpetrators, free the abducted spouse, and bring the assailants to justice.

Quoting the governor, his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, stated, “We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity. My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always.”

As of the time of this report, the Kwara State Police Commissioner, Victor Olaiya, had not responded to inquiries about the incident. The attack marks another tragic event in the escalating insecurity plaguing various regions in Nigeria.
