Suspected Herdsmen Attack Claims Lives of Two Ekiti Monarchs; Others Flee

In a tragic incident on Monday, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen launched an attack in Ekiti State, resulting in the killing of two traditional rulers. The unfortunate event occurred between Oke-Ako and Ipao-Ekiti in Ajoni Local Government Area of the state. The victims, identified as the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti in Ajoni, Ikole Local Government Area, were ambushed by the gunmen while returning from a meeting.

Reports indicate that the armed attackers targeted the monarchs as they were traveling together. The Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti succumbed to the assailants’ bullets, and the attackers reportedly looted their personal belongings before dragging their bodies into the bush.

In a narrow escape, the Alara of Ara in Ikole Local Government also faced a similar encounter with the armed assailants. However, the monarch managed to evade abduction as the attackers attempted to forcefully take them away.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges posed by suspected herdsmen in various regions. Local sources revealed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the vulnerability faced by traditional rulers in the area.
