Anidayi Anebira A’Nyase nini (Welcom back Ebira People) – In this article I will be touch lighting a very important topic, I have been asked to give a speech on this while I was in school in Ekiti state back in 2015, so i think all Ebira Youths needs to know about Magun among Ebira Tradition.
What is Magun?
Magun is a word from Yoruba Language which simply means Don’t Climb (Ma means Don’t, while Gun means Climb) this word is used in Ebira Language because Magun as a charm in Ebiraland can be traced down to Yoruba land. According to the research I carried out, I found out that all the ingredients for magun in Ebiraland are all gotten from Yorubaland.
So according to an article on magun on Pulse.NG, Magun is done to restrict either man or woman from sexual promiscuity. Parents can place magun on their daughters to keep them from being promiscuous and punish anyone who rapes them, or it could be done by in-laws, lovers, spouses to keep husbands or wives from being unfaithful.
The magun is usually laid without consent and/or trickily. A broomstick or thread can be placed on a doorstep or walkway for the woman to cross over. Nevertheless, the result can be very deadly.
A woman with this spell that is unfaithful can get ridden with strange illnesses, boils, small pox or increased sweating, and could eventually die. A man with the spell who cheats could end up crowing like a rooster, enlargement of the private part, headaches, convulsions or somersaulting.
However, the most common manifestation of this charm happens when a woman laid with the spell commits adultery, the penis of the lover becomes stuck in the vagina with severe pains until the husband comes to cancel the spell.
Magun in Ebira Tradition.
Magun has been used for centuries to catch a wife who has an extra-marital affair or to put a promiscuous woman in check.
The shocking part of this is that the charm is put on a woman without her knowledge.
3 Types of Magun
- Magun laced on Sticks of Broom
- Magun laced on a thread
- Magun prepared on a padlock
A stick of broom or thread is usually placed on the floor for a woman to unknowingly walk over it. Once she works over the thread or broom stick, the charm takes its effect.
Another one is the magun laced on a Padlock with key, the charm is prepared on a padlock, once the padlock is locked, the key is removed and given to the woman, once she holds the key the charm takes its effect.

- A woman and her lover stick like glue during the process of sex. The man cannot detach himself from the woman. This sometimes leads to death and in some cases a public humiliation of the stuck couple.
- In another variation when a man sleeps with a woman who has magun on her, he starts to crow like a rooster. It is said that the man would crow for three times and by the third time he would end up dead.
- Another popular variation of magun is that of the man somersaulting three times. Just like the chicken magun, when the man somersaults the third time he ends up dead.
- Another effect of magun is thirst, the more the person that contracted magun asked for more water the more he draws nearer to death.

Magun is popular in Nigeria. In 2001, revered Nigerian filmmaker Tunde Kelani released a movie called “Thunderbolt: Magun” which dwelt on the mystery of the charm.
Even with the popularity of magun, it really hasn’t stopped or slowed down extra-marital affairs. Not many people have what it takes to do such a bold move.
